TONIGHT on the August edition of NegativeSp8ce Radio Show – I will join Nikki and Doug of the band Lucid Fly to be the very first co-host ever!  This episode is actually the “Master of NegativeSp8ce” perk they offered from their successful Indiegogo campaign for their upcoming debut full length album, Building Castles in Air.  I will be there on behalf of 80/20 Records and I had the honor of choosing the playlist which includes recent releases from Haken, The Pineapple Thief, Bent Knee, The Mute Gods, Thank You Scientist, Captain Squeegee, and Lobate Scarp!  I will also be shamelessly plugging  Lobate’s Kickstarter campaign for the new album You Have It All, to be produced and mixed by Rich Mouser (Spock’s Beard, Transatlantic, Neal Morse, District ’97)

We hope you’ll join us at 5pm PST / 8pm EST on Lucky Star Radiowww.luckystarradio.com for this “progtastic adventure” 😀

In case you aren’t able to tune in today, a day or so later it will posted on mixcloud.com/lucidfly.

Honourable mention: Big Big Train – Folklore (2016) — Grendel HeadQuarters

Oh my, where to start? Well, I have to admit, I never heard of the band Big Big Train before, until I listened to Stacy Doller’s Prog Britannia show (which used to be on Progrock.com, and now on Progzilla Radio). I really liked the songs that I heard, so I started to do some research. […]

Album Review: The Remains of What Was Left ★★★★☆ @PaperHouseBand @KenKraylie @TedTwoSheds — Paper House

Check out the great new album from Paper House, just released today: The Remains of What Was Left. You can listen to the whole thing for free over at Bandcamp (and then buy your own portable digital copy).

It’s their finest release to date. All the tracks are solid. The elaborate instrumentation has many very cool retro sounds, the songwriting is really good, and the best tracks are even the prog-length ones: “Intricate Wisdom” and “The Remains of What Was Left.”

I want a CD of this one. Would vinyl be too much to ask? Let us know, guys, because this is a really fine record. Nicely done, with a sweet classic sound.

Trond Øie – Expectations (2015) — Grendel HeadQuarters

Oh yes, I had expectations for this album! I never heard of artist Trond Øie before, and this album Expectations seems to be his solo debut. The sleeve looks very good and I really like the artwork that is used. The album is on the short side-only four tracks making the album 25 minutes long, so […]

Metal Mondays: Testament Announce New Album

testament-new01Ok, so I’m a little late with this news, but I just saw that the San Francisco Bay area thrash legends, Testament, recently announced the release of a new forthcoming album. The Brotherhood of the Snake will be released via Nuclear Blast on October 28, 2016.

I really enjoyed their last album, 2012’s Dark Roots of the Earth. Testament is a metal band that has become better and better since their inception in the 1980s. They brilliantly combine their style of thrash with straight-up metal and a few toned-down heavy rockers. They are very similar in style to Metal Allegiance, which isn’t surprising since guitarist Alex Skolnick plays for both groups.

The band has said that this album will be even thrashier than their previous albums, with about half of the songs being thrash metal. The album will see singer Chuck Billy singing in his signature heavy voice, while avoiding the death vocals of their earlier albums. Basically, if you liked Dark Roots of the Earth, you’re probably going to like the new album.

Check out their website for more details.

Thrash on, Progarchy, and enjoy your Metal Monday.

Revisiting the 31 UK Singles of Kate Bush

Wow wow, wow wow, you have to read this fun list over at the Telegraph. It starts off like this:

From the moment 18-year-old Kate Bush stepped on to the stage at Top of the Pops and gave a career-defining performance of Wuthering Heights, she has beguiled and baffled with her every unhinged shriek and wild, wide-eyed gesture.

Since that extraordinary 1978 debut, she has released a further 30 singles, despite being anything but your typical singles artist. Bush’s greatest hits – and even those that failed to much trouble the charts – all display a creativity and variety unparalleled in pop music.
