Thank you, Brad, for posting this. After the news of Brubeck’s death, I pulled out a bunch of my jazz books written in the 1950s and early 1960s, just to see how Brubeck was perceived and described then. One word that came up more than once was “controversial”, because of his unique approach, not to just time but to his chords, touch, etc. But it was also noted that he was one of the pioneers in breaking down race barriers. A man of both musical genius and moral integrity.
