Why Burning Shed Matters

A great comment from Pete Morgan (founder of Burning Shed).  Very honored to have him post at progarchy.  [Lee, we love you, too; but, you already knew this!]

***

Thanks for the comments about us versus Amazon.

Firstly, no we’ll never be able to compete with them. That’s partly due to scale but also because, unlike Amazon, we pay all of our taxes on top of trying to pay our staff a decent wage. In that regard it is not a level playing field.

Nevertheless, we are often cheaper than them on new releases because the ‘free’ delivery is built into the cost of the item or the Amazon Prime fee (there’s no such thing as a free lunch after all).

Packages shipped from one side of the Atlantic to the other will by post always take a week or so. Other than sending everything by courier (at great cost) there’s not much we can do about that, sorry, but we do try to ship as far ahead of release date as possible.

I don’t agree that our postage charges are a ‘bit of a rip off’. International postage is expensive and we charge £3.08 for a CD in a card mailer which is less than Royal Mail’s standard Airmail tariff (£3.30) as we pass on our volume discount to customers.

We’re always looking for cheaper ways to send things though and if we can do it we will.

I hope you’ll continue to give us a go on those occasions where we have something Amazon don’t.

Cheers

Pete

Burning Shed for Americans

American progarchists, a few of you asked me how to order from Burning Shed from this side of the Atlantic.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been ordering from them for years, and I’ve never had a problem.  In fact, I’ve found Burning Shed nothing but utterly professional.

You can pay with credit card or, much more easily, Pay Pal.

Calculating the exchange rate from dollars to pounds and the other way around is pretty easy.

Burning Shed for Americans.001
Ok, so I’m not a genius when it comes to graphics.  The red line and circle indicates where to switch from pounds to dollars.

Now, spend some dollars!

[p.s. I’ve also had great service from America’s Laser’s Edge.  Always worth supporting them.]

Big Big Train’s FAR SKIES DEEP TIME Reissued

FSDT cover-300x300
To be re-released, March 16, 2018.

According to an email from Burning Shed this afternoon, Big Big Train has redesigned and remastered its 2010 maxi-ep release, FAR SKIES DEEP TIME.  Coming after 2009’s THE UNDERFALL YARD, FAR SKIES DEEP TIME was never seen by the band as a proper studio release, but rather as a compilation of disparate tracks.

Over the last eight years, two versions of the maxi-ep have appeared, one with a remake of Anthony Phillip’s “Master of Time,” and the other with a remake of a very early Big Big Train track, “Kingmaker.”

This 2018 version will be the first to incorporate both tracks onto one release.

Big Big Train is the premier European band of third-wave prog, and this latest release will only add to the group’s massively growing but already sterling reputation.

New Gazpacho: SOYUZ

Image taken from the Burning Shed website.

Great news today from Burning Shed.  The forthcoming album from Gazpacho: SOYUZ is now available for pre-order.

I didn’t realize this would be coming so soon.  I’m in the middle of a retrospective of all of Gazpacho’s albums.  This, of course, will be coming to a progarchy website near you.

For now, though, pre-order SOYUZ.

And, now, to wait patiently. . . .

Jerry Ewing’s WONDROUS STORIES

The price is a bit steep for those of us in North America, but Jerry Ewing’s latest book (out in December) looks quite gorgeous.

Existential Genius: Cosmograf’s HAY MAN DREAMS

Cosmograf, THE HAY MAN DREAMS (Cosmograf Music, 2017).

Professor Birzer’s grade: A.

hay man

Having grown up on Great Plains of North America, surrounded by grazing horses, big skies, and farms, that guy that hangs out on a big kind of crucifix in the fields of wheat was always, to me, a “Scarecrow.”

And, that really, really scary Batman villain, Dr. Jonathan Crane, is also a “Scarecrow.”  He’s creepy in Bruce Timm’s animated Batman, but he’s downright demonic in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.

When I first saw the title of Robin Armstrong’s latest Cosmograf masterpiece (and, yes, this IS a masterpiece) HAY-MAN DREAMS, I had no clue what the album would be about.  After all, Armstrong loves existential themes of isolation, alienation, and timelessness.  When I first saw the title, I just assumed the album would be about a farmer who cultivates hay.  Maybe some lonely old guy who couldn’t figure out the modern world.  I knew that Armstrong would do something wild with it, but I didn’t know what.  Hay man?

Burning Shed Updates Rather Seriously

A note from Burning Shed came this morning.  It looks like the site is rather seriously upgrading.  Frankly, I’ve found the current website excellent, and the service even more so.  Nice, however, to see the company getting better and better.

It’s our 16th birthday and we’re making a big change to celebrate.

Our new website is going live today and even though it might look quite similar to the old website it has lots of features which we hope will make life better for you (and for us!).

You will be able to:

* Create an account – save your name / address detail. For security reasons we won’t store your PayPal or credit card information.

* Everyone who creates an account will get a free, exclusive, download (more details to come)

* View your order history, check your order status and any tracking information

* Create a ‘Wish List’

* Gift Vouchers – send them to friends and family (or ask them to send one to you!)

* New shipping methods – choose either post or courier

* See recommendations for similar or related albums

* An expanded catalogue with advanced browse and search functions, including format and tags

Please note that any order you have placed on the old website is still active and will be shipped, but will not appear (for now) on your account in the new system

We might take longer to answer emails and ship orders over the next few days while we make sure everything is working properly.

Please bear with us over the next few days while we make sure everything is working properly.

Good luck and see you on the other side…

Burning Shed’s Latest Ad

I’m not in the habit of advertising for a company so blatantly, but I’m really taken with this Burning Shed postcard that came with the Steve Hackett release, THE NIGHT SIREN.  Beautiful art.
