The Enid on DVD

Bridge_Union_Chapel_Blu_Ray_front_500_x_577

Last night I finally found time to watch my Enid DVD that I got for Christmas. I knew it was going to be good but with this show The Enid have taken it to a totally new level. The sound is crystal clear, the playing is wonderful as ever and the visuals and camera work are spectacular without being flashy or over complicated. Joe Payne won the Prog Magazine Award for best vocalist last year and if you haven’t heard him yet I suggest you head to this you tube link without further ado. Enid You Tube  His range is out of this world. This song features his upper register but he is equally comfortable using his lower range. It is also great to see Robert John Godfrey enjoying his playing even though he is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

If you have never heard this band before, they are worth checking out. From their beginnings in 1976 with two classic all instrumental albums: Aerie Fairie Nonsense and In The Region Of The Summer Stars   which would appeal to fans of Genesis and the like to the modern day Enid with this line up. Journeys End and Evicta are the two most recent albums.

They have a new album out in April called Dust and I for one can’t wait

Happy Birthday Progarchy

Tiger Moth Tales
Tiger Moth Tales

Although I have been absent from this site for a while in writing terms, I have still read every article written and agree with Brad that this is the most intelligent and well written music site on the interweb. I have been creating a new life for myself in a new country and slowly the pieces are falling together. In the meanwhile, can I point you all in the direction of The Storytellers album by Tiger Moth Tales. It is a great prog album that lends a style to Genesis circa Trick and Wind and Wuthering but because of the nature of the songs ranging from sleeping beauty to pied piper of Hamlin to Billy’s goats gruff it is a great way to get kids and in my case grand kids interested in the music. It is a fine album although I have yet to hear anything getting close to The Tangent release earlier this year ( not including the BBT ep coz it’s not an album)

Daevid Allen. Farewell to Zero The Hero

It was so sad this afternoon to hear of the passing of Daevid Allen from cancer. He was the mainstay of the group Gong for over 40 years and before that a founder member of Soft Machine. He created his own world called Planet Gong on which lived Zero The Hero and the Pot Head Pixies. The 3 albums from the seventies combined to become the Planet Gong Trilogy and are well worth checking out. They are Floating Teapot, Angels Egg and You.
All are excellent but You is a wonderful album. So Daevid heads to that great teapot in the sky but leaves behind a wonderful legacy of music that pushed every boundary he could find.
Gong released a new album last year in which Daevid basically said goodbye to his fans in the song Thank You.

The track below is taken from that album

I am, you are, we are……crazy Farewell and thank you for the music

Game Over

So I listened to the new Tangent album last night……………

The new album (Insidious Music).
The new album (Insidious Music).

That’s it. Game over!!!!!! No need to listen to anything else for the rest of the year. There have been some good releases already in these early months. Glass Hammer, Steven Wilson etc but this stands out a mile and will be album of the year. That’s all folks!!! Grab your hats and coats and head for the door.

Mr Birzer has already posted his review and a good one it is too. No need to elaborate on that. As a musician, you just have to put your hands up and say……. Total Genius !!!!

People I Don’t Know Who Do Nice Things

I had a hard time trying to think of a title for this post. I wanted something snappy and catchy but ended up with People I don’t know who do nice things. Let me explain.
There is a man in Greece. His name is Dimitriadis Tasos. I have since learnt that he is an artist and a fan of progressive rock music. One morning a few weeks ago I noticed that this guy had posted a video on you tube of one of our songs, Desert Sands. It was a really good video, miles better than anything I could have done. After getting in touch with him he said he had done it because he liked the music, and would like to do some more. He has since done Reminiscence and last night he posted this one for Situation Disorientation.

There is no reason for him doing this for us apart from the fact he likes our music.
Likewise, there is a gentleman with the initials BB who occasionally writes on this site who has championed our music and written some really nice words, not only about the music but about me as well. It feels good when strangers ( people you don’t know ) do something nice for you. I have also had the opposite happen to me this week and I am hurting from it so thank you to the people I don’t know for restoring my faith in the world.

Thanks for reading the thoughts of a rambling mind.

Kate Bush Concert from Daily Mirror

Aug 27, 2014 13:05 By Mark Jefferies

The star kicked off the first show of her Hammersmith Apollo residency last night and thanked her son Bertie, without whom it wouldn’t have been possible

Singer Kate Bush has dubbed her son Bertie “my chief consultant, my editor, my confidant” and said her live shows would never have got off the ground without his help.

In programme notes for her first shows in 35 years, acclaimed artist Kate tells her fans of her closeness with her 16-year-old son.

She said: “Without my son Bertie, this would never have happened. Without his encouragement and enthusiasm, particularly in the early stages when I was very frightened to commit to pushing the ‘go’ button, I’m sure I would have backed out.

“Throughout he has been my chief consultant, my editor, my confidant. In order for him to be part of this, which has always part of the deal, he has had to work really hard in order to keep his school commitments as well as his commitments to the show.

Explosive first show

“He is a very talented actor and beautiful singer, as you will witness and he brings something special to the show through his presence. Thank you Bertie. Thank you so much.”

The 56-year-old British star appeared alongside Bertie at London’s Hammersmith Apollo on Tuesday night – the scene of her last live show in 1979.

A three-hour set which was given a standing ovation kicked off a run of 22 shows , titled Before the Dawn, which sold out almost instantly when tickets went on sale.

Backed by seven musicians, Bush opened the show with Lily, from the 1993 album Red Shoes.

Stunning

The show also included the 1985 single Running Up That Hill and, from the Hounds of Love album and hits like King of the Mountain and Cloudbusting.

Singer Kate also admitted in the programme she cancelled planned London gigs at a venue “similar in size to an aircraft hanger” because she “felt physically sick seeing how big a space this was”.

She then discovered Hammersmith Apollo, now called Eventim Apollo, was free.

“The reason I wanted to have one venue for the shows was so that we could be ambitious with theatrical ideas, knowing that we wouldn’t have to pack it all up and move. The space could become ours and we could create ‘worlds’ within that space.”

Tears, goose bumps and spine-tingling electricity filled the Hammersmith Apollo on Tuesday evening, when Kate Bush took to the stage to launch her long-awaited set of live gigs – her first in 35 years.

It had been a long time coming – and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

The concert was described by BBC 6Music DJ Lauren Laverne as a ”wonderful mix.”

“intimate, adventurous, avant-garde but entirely unpretentious, so clever but so warm and inclusive,” she said.
