RochaNews: Gazpacho’s Latest, MOLOK

A review copy of the latest Gazpacho showed up about three or four days ago, and I’ve been listening to it, over and over again.  My first thought: what is this?  My second thought: wow, this is really subtle.  My third thought: there’s something really profound going on here.  My fourth (and most recent) thought: this is freaking incredible.  I still need to listen with headphones, but my thoughts (collectively) after about five listens–MOLOK is a thing of intense beauty, the best Gazpacho has made since MISSA ANTROPOS.  More to come. . . .

Molok. In English, Moloch, a king who demands the sacrifice of children.

Molok, the follow up to the acclaimed 2014 album Demon, sees the band continue to push the boundaries for creating the most complicated and strangest concepts for a record while simultaneously becoming the first band ever to actively try to destroy the universe with an album. A small code that sounds like a strange noise at the end of the album will cause the correction software that runs in all CD players to generate a random number every time the CD is played. If that number should correspond to the actual position of all electrons in the universe then technically the universe could be destroyed.

Dr. Adam Washington from the University of Sheffield confirms that this is science fact rather than fiction: “The random signal produced by the end of the disk contains enough bits of information to express a measurement of the total number of fundamental particles present in the universe. If the noise actually contained such a measurement, and that measurement was performed rapidly enough, the universe’s total particle count could be fixed under the Quantum Zeno effect. Locking the total particle count would prevent the pair production that forms a fundamental part of the decay of black holes. Without such decay forces, black holes would remain stable forever, without the need for nearby matter or the cosmic microwave background to keep them fed. This would greatly hasten the practical end of the universe.”

The band further commented: “If it can be destroyed by such minute creatures within it, if it is just a chemical reaction, then does it have any spiritual value? In this scenario there is no good or bad, just an absence of meaning.”

Across the album there are religious themes going head to head with modern day new science ideas and theories, Gazpacho’s Thomas Andersen states, “the album itself is about a man that sometime around 1920 decides that wherever anyone worships a God they always seem to be worshipping stone in some form. Whether it is a grand cathedral, the stone in Mecca or Stonehenge. God seems to have been chased by his worshipers into stone never to return. This harkens back to Norwegian folk myths where if a troll was exposed to sunlight it would turn to stone but it also reflects the way God has been incommunicado for a very long time.”

The band goes on to say: “In a mechanistic view of the universe all events in the universe are a consequence of a previous event. This means that with enough information you should be able to calculate the past and the future and this is what he does. He names the machine ‘Molok’ after the biblical demon into whose jaws children were sacrificed because his machine crunches numbers. On solstice day he starts the machine and it quickly gains some form of intelligence as it races through history undergoing its own evolution.”

Throughout Molok Gazpacho focuses on the idea that without God/a god to guide us, humanity is unsure of the meaning of life, that while we attempt to fill the void with other things we’ve still not found the answer; without a master to lean on we are very much alone in this universe.

On the album Gazpacho makes a direct connection with history. Norwegian music archaeologist Gjermund Kolltveit appears on the song “Molok Rising,” playing his reconstruction of stone-age instruments with an educated guess at what the early songs of worship must have sounded like. This includes small stones, moose jaws and an assortment of flutes and stringed instruments. He also plays the Skåra stone, a singing stone which has a strong possibility of having been in use since the last ice age ended 10,000 years ago. Technically this means that the album uses the oldest original instrument ever recorded on an album.

The band is also joined by world-renowned Norwegian accordion player Stian Carstensen who is a central member of Balkan-jazz orchestra Farmers Market.

Stay tuned for more information on Gazpacho and Molok, out this week on Kscope.

PROGRESSIVE SUPERGROUP JANE GETTER PREMONITION LAUNCHES NEW TRACK “SURPRISED” ON POPMATTERS.COM
New album “On” feat. Adam Holzman, Chad Wackerman, Alex Skolnick, Bryan Beller, Corey Glover out October 2 on Madfish

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Progressive supergroup, Jane Getter Premonition, has teamed up with PopMatters.com to launch a new track, “Surprised,” taken from the band’s Madfish debut, On, out October 2. Stream album opener, “Surprised,” online at: http://www.popmatters.com/post/196804-jane-getter-premonition-surprised-audio-premiere/.
“‘Surprised’ is based on the opening picking riff,” Getter told PopMatters. “I came up with it one day when I was practicing and the song took off from there. Being a long-time fan of Living Colour, it was a real treat to have Corey Glover sing on this song (and the album!). His voice is the perfect combination of rock, R&B and gospel, and he brings the intensity and soulfulness to the song that I was hoping for.
“The lyrics came from my frustration and astonishment at how toxic the political arena is right now. I continue to be ‘surprised’ and amazed at how hypocritical and self-serving some politicians are.”
Recorded at Avatar Studios in New York, On features a stellar line up of progressive and rock musicians – keyboardist Adam Holzman (Miles Davis, Steven Wilson), bass player Bryan Beller (Joe Satriani, The Aristocrats), jazz/rock drummer Chad Wackerman (Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth, Steven Wilson) and special guests including vocalist Corey Glover (Living Colour), jazz/metal guitarist Alex Skolnick (Testament) and British saxophonist, flautist and clarinettist Theo Travis (Steven Wilson, Robert Fripp). The album was co-produced by Jane Getter and Adam Holzman. Mixing duties were handled by Adam Holzman and Anthony Ruotolo at Spin Studios in Long Island City, N.Y.

EARTHSIDE, LOUDWIRE LAUNCH NEW SINGLE “MOB MENTALITY” FEATURING LAJON WITHERSPOON (SEVENDUST), MOSCOW STUDIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Debut album “A Dream in Static” to be released later this year

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – New Haven-based progressive ensemble, Earthside, has teamed up with Loudwire to launch a new track, “Mob Mentality,” the second song to be released from the band’s upcoming debut, A Dream in Static, due out later this year. The nearly 10-minute track features guest vocals from Sevendustfrontman, Lajon Witherspoon, and a full orchestral arrangement composed by guitarist Jamie van Dyck and performed by the Moscow Studio Symphony Orchestra (MSSO). Stream “Mob Mentality” exclusively at: http://loudwire.com/earthside-lajon-witherspoon-mob-mentality-exclusive-song-premiere/.

“‘Mob Mentality’ was a four-year undertaking that became an epic journey that took us all over the world,” van Dyck told Loudwire. “It connected us with all sorts of collaborators and new friends. The song began as my senior composition to complete the undergrad music major at Yale, and has since led my bandmates and me to record the Earthside tracks in Stockholm, the Moscow Studio Symphony Orchestra in Russia, and Lajon’s vocals in Iowa with 3 Years Hollow vocalist Jose Urquiza at the helm engineering the vocals session and performing some of the backing vocals on the song.

“Working with LJ and composing for a full orchestra are each lifelong dreams that have been fulfilled, and I’m very grateful to the contributions from them, my bandmates, and so many others who allowed for such a stupidly ambitious vision to actually be realized.”

For further insight on “Mob Mentality,” the band has released two teaser videos discussing the “Mob Mentality” recording process and inspiration on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHpxsYs-YUw and here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hdI6aHHB7I.

An inherently collaborative cross-continental project, A Dream in Static was recorded in Stockholm, Sweden under the watch of renowned producer and mix engineer, David Castillo (OpethKatatoniaBloodbath), and additional mix and mastering engineer, Jens Bogren (OpethSoilworkThe OceanDevin Townsend).

van Dyck further elaborated on the album recording process: “New surroundings and collaboration are two of the best catalysts for inspiring creative energy. Living in Stockholm and recording with David Castillo was the opportunity of a lifetime for us. We were immersed in such a vibrant musical space and passionate group of people that ultimately made this record what it is. That inclusive spirit in working with David and the guest musicians on the record brought out that energy in each of us.”

Through organic layers of living, breathing orchestra (courtesy of the Moscow Studio Symphony Orchestra), and an eclectic arsenal of world music-influenced instrumentation, Earthside fashions an ever-changing sound that is equally engrossing alongside a work of cinematic art as it is resonating throughout a densely packed concert venue.

A Dream in Static, the group’s conceptual mission statement, is a story of purposeful sacrifice and existential yearning told across sweeping instrumental movements, interwoven with adventurous vocal compositions featuring premier voices from across the rock and metal worlds.

“Our music aims to evoke the full range of human emotions,” van Dyck added. “Having those emotions and themes expressed more directly through the voices of some of our favorite singers and musicians was an unbelievable experience and something we cannot wait to share with everyone.”

The first single, “The Closest I’ve Come,” can be streamed on YouTube at: http://youtu.be/AL_v5U2AeIs.

A teaser video for the album can be seen on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wG5rMe3KTV4.

Live dates and additional album details will be announced shortly. Stay tuned for more information.

THE RECEIVER, ALLMUSIC.COM STREAM UPCOMING ALBUM “ALL BURN”

Kscope debut “All Burn” out June 23

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Midwest symphonic dream-prog duo, The Receiver, has teamed up with AllMusic.com to stream the band’s forthcoming album, All Burn, before it hits stores next week via Kscope. Stream All Burnexclusively at: http://www.allmusic.com/blog/post/album-premiere-the-receiver/.

The band commented: “This is our first self-produced album, and we’re very excited to share it. We’ve aimed for a dreamy, lofty aesthetic, rich in synthesizer textures, with songs that flow nicely as a cohesive album, but are also able to stand on their own. We’ve drawn inspiration from classic progressive rock (Pink Floyd, Yes) as well as current alternative acts (Blonde Redhead, Mew, Radiohead). Lyrically, we’ve tried to be honest with content that focuses on the peaks and valleys of relationship, and the aftermath. We hope our fans and new listeners will find something here that resonates with them.”

All Burn can be pre-ordered now digitally at: http://smarturl.it/TR_AllBurn_Download and physically through the Kscope web-store at: www.kscopemusic.com/store.

Comprised of brothers Casey (vocals, synths/keyboards, bass) and Jesse Cooper (drums & vocals), the siblings call All Burn their “best material to date which focuses on a dreamier aesthetic than our earlier work.”

All Burn is also the first self-produced Receiver album, with mixing handled by Danny Kalb (Beck, Ben Harper, Foster the People, Karen O) and mastering by Brian Lucey (Sigur Ros, The Shins, The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys).

The Receiver is an incredibly active touring partnership, having played throughout North America and sharing the stage with notable acts such as St. Vincent, Midlake, The Album Leaf, Mono, Dawes, Royal Canoe, Maserati, Telefon Tel Aviv, Mr. Gnome and Operators to name a few, as well as performing at 2014’s CMJ Festival in New York.

RochaNews: Katatonia “Sanctitude” Concert Film

th

KATATONIA LAUNCHES “DAY” VIDEO CLIP FROM UPCOMING “SANCTITUDE” CONCERT FILM “Sanctitude” available on Blu-ray, CD+DVD, 2LP & digital download March 31 via Kscope

SWEDEN – Swedish master of melancholy, Katatonia, has launched a live video of the track “Day” from its upcoming concert film, Sanctitude, to be released in North America on March 31, 2015 (March 30 U.K. & RoW, April 3 Germany) via Kscope. The live video for “Day” is the first taste of what fans can expect from Sanctitude; it can be

viewed on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB8FC22Yc8w and Vimeo at: https://vimeo.com/119260348.

Katatonia’s Anders Nystrom comments on the release: “Day… something you wake up to, or at least have to pull through, over and over. Most of them you forget about, but a couple you maybe look back upon and wish to relive again.

“Unfortunately in reality, I’m afraid that’s not possible, at least not until Apple buys NASA and releases a new version of their Time Capsule backup machine and send people into the cloud and back into history to fetch an older version of their lives, but luckily for us, there’s a current control of our music that doesn’t need time travel.

“We have always felt that if there’s a need, we’re entitled to the freedom to give our old songs a makeover in the now rather than the never. So, in the making of ‘Sanctitude’ there was one song in particular that meant a great deal to us. In fact, it was our first song ever to feature entirely clean vocals accompanied by clean guitars and it was written and released right in the peak of our death metal years.

“The song stood out, but isolated itself into oblivion in the climate of heavier music. Therefore we wanted this song to get a second chance, to be re-discovered. Even 20 years later when performing it live for the first time, it appears the parks are still grey and look the same…”

Sanctitude will be released in four formats:

  1. Blu-ray DVD in 5.1 surround sound plus ‘Beyond The Chapel’ documentary including brand new interviews with Anders Nystrom & Jonas Renkse.
  2. CD/DVD package – audio / visual set including ‘Beyond the Chapel’ documentary.
  3. Double LP (incl. download code)
  4. Digital download (audio)

Sanctitude can be pre-ordered in physical formats via the Kscope web-store at:

http://www.kscopemusic.com/store.
A Sanctitude teaser trailer can be seen on YouTube at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrhpdIGQwGw&feature=youtu.be and Vimeo at: https://vimeo.com/118916551.

Sanctitude was filmed and recorded in the stunning, candle-lit setting of London’s Union Chapel during Katatonia’s May 2014 ‘Unplugged & Reworked’ tour – an intimate acoustic evening performing tracks from the Dethroned & Uncrowned album alongside atmospheric classics from the band’s entire career, stripped and reworked. The 80 minute set features 17 songs across the albums The Great Cold Distance, Viva Emptiness, Brave Murder Day, Last Fair Deal Gone Down, Dead End Kings and Dethroned & Uncrowned, including fan favorite, “Teargas.” The show closes with the sublime “The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here” and a special guest appearance by Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland of Dutch legend, The Gathering. The band was also joined on guitar and vocals by The Pineapple Thief frontman and songwriter, Bruce Soord.

All audio on Sanctitude has been mixed and mastered by Bruce Soord, with artwork once more supplied by long-time visual collaborator Travis Smith.

Katatonia was formed in 1991 by Anders Nyström and Jonas Renkse. Its debut album, Dance of December Souls, was released in 1993, gaining the band recognition for its eclectic brand of gothic doom/death metal and joining acts such as Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride as one of the genre’s defining bands. On future albums, a newer, sleeker Katatonia sound came to the fore, starting with a streamlined and structured collection of melodic dark rock songs that became third album, Discouraged Ones, which is widely regarded as the main evolution point for modern day Katatonia.

In September 2013, Kscope released Dethroned & Uncrowned, a reworking of the band’s 2012 epic Dead End Kings (originally released on Kscope’s sister label Peaceville). Dethroned & Uncrowned allowed Katatonia the opportunity to explore a more progressive sound, creating new moods and textures while still staying truthful to the core of the original songs.

Stay tuned for more information on Katatonia and Sanctitude, out this month on Peaceville.

GYRE, REVOLVER LAUNCH NEW TRACK “MANIFEST”

Upcoming EP ‘Moirai’ out May 12

NEW YORK – N.Y./N.J. progressive metal outfit, Gyre, has teamed up with Revolver to launch a brand new track, “Manifest,” from the band’s forthcoming ‘Moirai’ EP, due out May 12. Stream “Manifest” exclusively at: http://www.revolvermag.com/?p=73657.

“The song speaks of pushing yourself to the edge and finding a balance between your dreams and reality,” Gyre told Revolver. “It speaks of seeing past the tentacles that try to control and conform, and to embrace your individuality.”

‘Moirai’ can be pre-ordered now through the Gyre Bandcamp page at: www.gyrebandmusic.bandcamp.com.

An additional ‘Moirai’ track, “I Release,” can be streamed on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dT8xhqTpS5E.

The band added: “This album is a resurgence – a reminder that it’s never too late to truly awaken your potential in life and control your own fate. We can guide ourselves to this realization by expressing our passion and doing what we love. This can be different for people, but it is through the act of creation we feel our self-worth and purpose bloom.

“‘Moirai’ is a term for the three sisters of fate. It ties this third album together. Two sisters represent birth and death, inevitable forces beyond an individual’s control. We are Lachesis, the second sister…the story in between. If we want to, if we decide…we can write our own story. Ultimately, we are all completely responsible for our own actions and emotions.”
‘Moirai’ was recorded by Juan Soaz and Ying Chee then mixed and mastered with Kevin Antressian at Backroom Studios (Dillinger Escape Plan, The Number 12 Looks Like You, Adrenaline Mob, Foxy Shazam).
